Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he played Philippe Coutinho with a small injury on Saturday, but insisted that the Brazilian was fit enough to play. Coutinho played the whole 90 minutes of the Reds’ 0-0 draw with Southampton.

Coutinho returned from international duty with Brazil complaining of muscle tightness. Klopp has been criticised in the past due to the injury record of some of his players. But the German denied that he took any risks with Coutinho.

"They [Coutinho and Firmino] were back on Thursday at Melwood, that was the earliest moment we could see them. But then, of course, they cannot train after a long flight. Because of the flight, Phil [Coutinho] had a little bit [of a problem] but obviously no big problem as everybody could see today.

“We would have taken no risk, 100 per cent not.  Three things are important for me – what the doc says, what the scan says when you have one and what the player says. All were thumbs up so we let him run."
