Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho has dismissed speculation that he provoked Lionel Messi in Manchester City’s recent 4-1 win over Barcelona. Reports have emerged of a disagreement in the tunnel after full-time, with Fernandinho said to be at the heart of the fallout.

Cadena Cope radio station claimed Fernandinho shouted at Messi in the tunnel. However, the Brazilian is adamant that the reports are untrue. The midfielder used his Instagram account to deny the stories.

“To the misinformed. I am totally unaware where from rumours could have emerged related to an alleged augment and provocation on my behalf towards Messi! I can only reiterate that news spread by the media are not only false/untrue but absurd, as I did not have contact with any of the players of Barcelona’s technical team after the match.

“Instigation and provocation does not reflect my character as I strongly uphold value and respect in and out of the pitch, irrespective of which player or opponent team.” Reports indicate that City assistant manager Mikel Arteta was also involved in the fracas.

Fernandinho and Messi will again face off in Belo Horizonte next week, as Brazil take on Argentina in a World Cup qualifier.
