Barcelona announced through their official Twitter on Friday that Brazilian forward Neymar has signed a contract extension with the club until 2021.
The new contract of Neymar with Barcelona was already settled before the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. However, the player had to travel to perform for the national team, so the signing of the agreement was postponed. The previous contract of Neymar at Barcelona was until 2018. In the new contract, the release clause of Barcelona’s number 11 will increase gradually until the third year, starting at €200 million, to €222 million in the second season and stopping at €250 million in the final three years.
Neymar said: “I’m very happy to renew with this club, where I feel at home. I thought, with my family, that it was best for me to stay here. The dressing room scared me a little. I knew that joining Barcelona was big and at first it was a shock. However, when I walked into the dressing room I could see that the players were very humble, and they have become my good friends.”
Coach Luis Enrique also expressed his delight following the contract extension of Neymar. He said: “The renewal of Neymar is great news. He has grown into one of the best players in the world.”
