Struggling to find form in the Brasileirão, and with the risk of relegation looming, São Paulo have already traced the initial plans for the upcoming season – to build a competitive squad is the main objective.
As reported by UOL Esporte, the club’s board have defined priorities: a number 10 and a striker. The idea is that both are major names, who can make an immediate impact on the pitch. For now, the board of São Paulo avoids talking about names, because they do not know how to get all the resources for contracting. The end of the year is a time of increased spending for clubs, which includes payment for the players’ vacation. In this scenario, the sale of some key players can allow investment and would help the club to balance their accounts.
As in 2016, defender Rodrigo Caio is the the most likeliest to leave in January. The defender had a proposal from Hamburg in Germany, but the negotiations did not advance. A major part of Brazil’s Olympic team, Rodrigo Caio was also the target of Sevilla, Lazio and Napoli in the previous transfer window. The expectation is that the club can receive up to €15 million from his sale. Earlier this year, São Paulo had made an approach for Atlético Mineiro striker Lucas Pratto; he was one of the popular names and is a player that still appeals to the board. Alexandre Pato was very close to returning to the Morumbi in the middle of the year, but the last-minute proposal from Villarreal enticed Corinthians and the striker. A starter in Spain, Pato has no chance of returning to Brazil. Jonathan Calleri, on the other hand, was one of the highlights of the team in the first half of 2016, but he has failed to impress at new club West Ham.
