Watford goalkeeper Huerelho Gomes insists that the Premier League is a more forgiving league for goalkeepers than it has been in the recent past. The Brazilian has been in fine form for the Hornets, winning players and supporters’ player of the season awards last season.

Gomes endured a tough time towards the end of his stint at Spurs, prior to signing for Watford. The veteran keeper insists that this is a symptom of the league becoming less physical for goalkeepers over recent seasons.

“I love it now. It is less physical for a keeper than when I arrived at Spurs,” he told the Daily Express. “When I came I had a few knockouts. I still have them! But now it is normal for me. You learn how to deal with situations.

“When I first came it was difficult because I did not know. I used to come out for the ball when I was at PSV and there was no one around me. But now… I saw a picture from when we beat Manchester United last month, and I am between Chris Smalling, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marouane Fellaini. I was the filling in the sandwich!”

The ex Cruzeiro and PSV Eindhoven goalie kept another clean sheet on Sunday as Watford defeated Middlesbrough 1-0 at the Riverside Stadium.
