Out of the 20 clubs participating in the Brazilian Championship, Santos are the only team who still have the same coach since the end of last season.
Corinthians president Roberto Andrade reached a deal with Oswaldo de Oliveira, who was confirmed as the new coach of the club. However, before closing the agreement for the former coach of Sport Recife, Roberto de Andrade had asked one of his aides to make contact with Santos coach Dorival Júnior, and more than once. According to the information from Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola, the first contact was made when Tite left Corinthians for the national team job in June. Dorival Júnior declined the invitation, claiming that he would not leave Santos in the middle of the season. Shortly after the resignation of Cristóvão Borges, in September, Dorival’s phone rang again. In an interview, Dorival revealed that he had invitations from five Brazilian clubs this season. The Santos coach refused to mention the names of the teams, but a person close to Roberto de Andrade admitted the contacts. Paulistão champion this year, Dorival has a contract with Santos until December 2017. Dorival has assured that his relationship with Santos president Modesto Roma is good, after the leader signed some players who were not indicated by him. Opting for Oswaldo was one of the last alternatives for Corinthians. Since the departure of Tite, the club tried to bring Sylvinho, Eduardo Baptista and Dorival. Roberto de Andrade came into a rift with former president Andrés Sánchez, who still has power behind the scenes of the club, and other directors like Eduardo Ferreira, to appoint Oswaldo.
