Even as an 18-year-old at Corinthians, defender Marquinhos had no doubt in saying that Thiago Silva was his reference in football.
Almost five years later, fate has brought an unusual situation for them in the Brazilian national team. For the match against Bolivia next Thursday in Natal, Marquinhos should be next to João Miranda in defence, for the third straight game. Thiago Silva, 32, who captained the nation at the World Cup in 2014, has returned to the side, but should be on the bench. The captain of Paris Saint-Germain has to work for a starting spot in Tite’s XI. Initially, the expectation was that Thiago Silva would start in the first games of the Seleção in September. But without being 100% fit, he missed out on the squad.
As mentioned in UOL Esporte, both Marquinhos and Thiago Silva are close friends. At times, for example, the PSG captain watches the videos of Marquinhos to give advice and help in his growth within the field. Perfectionism has given results for Marquinhos – after two years as a reserve in the French team and a lot of speculation about his future, the youngster was awarded a starting role following the sale of David Luiz to Chelsea. Marquinhos also played a key role in Brazil’s successful campaign at the Olympic Games. Now, finally, he has the opportunity to work with one who was his greatest reference for a long time. Thiago Silva, who had missed the Olympics just because he wasn’t released by PSG, has now fulfilled the goal of returning to the Seleção. His last participation was in the Copa América 2015.
