Brazilian defender Alex is without a club since June, when he finished his contract with Italian side AC Milan.
Santos have forwarded their first signing for next year; defender Alex has a verbal agreement to return to the Vila Belmiro. The information was revealed to Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola by a person close to the defender and confirmed by the board of Santos. Alex’s friend said: “The contract length and wages are set. What’s lacking is putting everything on paper and the signature.”
Outside Brazil since 2004, when Santos sold him to PSV Eindhoven, Alex is in the final stages of his recovery from a sprained right knee – the injury even stopped him from reaching a deal with Porto in July. Treatment has been held at Vila Belmiro. Alex has been Santos’ target for quite a while, but the demands of the former national team player delayed an agreement. He came to ask wages of around €82,000 per month and a bonus of approximately €825,000. At the time, Santos showed optimism about an agreement, but offered less than half. The defender then searched for clubs in Europe. After being Brasileirão champion with Santos in 2002 and 2004, he played for PSV Eindhoven, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan.
