Coach Dorival Júnior has been at Santos for a year and two months, and has won the Paulistão.
Out of the 20 clubs participating in the Brazilian Championship, Santos are the only team who still have the same coach since the end of last season. The interesting thing is that Dorival Júnior had a chance to move to at least five rival clubs of Santos in recent months. According to the information from Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola, the coach was sounded out by Corinthians, Grêmio, São Paulo, Cruzeiro and Internacional at some point of the year. Dorival didn’t open negotiations with the teams, nor used the invitations to bargain a salary increase at Vila Belmiro. His contract, which was signed in 2015, ends only in December 2017 and the relationship with Santos president Modesto Junior Roma is excellent.
The club that showed the most interest in Dorival was Corinthians, who contacted, via third parties, to enquire about the coach as soon as Tite left, three months ago. It also happened at thw weekend of Cristóvão Borges’ resignation – ten days ago. Timão continues without a coach and are currently led by assistant manager Fábio Carille. São Paulo’s interest in Dorival Júnior was following the exit of Edgardo Bauza to the Argentine national team. Then executive director of football, Gustavo Vieira de Oliveira wanted to know from a friend of Dorival if it was worth making an official proposal. He received the reply that the coach would not leave the Vila Belmiro.
Dorival completed one year at Santos on July 9, with 50 wins in 86 matches. He’s never completed as many games consecutively for a team in his career. The record was his first spell at Santos itself, in 2010, when he sat on the bench 73 times, with 41 wins.
