Palmeiras have good reasons to believe in the qualification for the 2017 continental competition, but it wouldn’t open the chance of keeping young striker Gabriel Jesus, who will be presented in January at Manchester City.

Palmeiras’ planning for next season is underway, and the board has already moved in search of reinforcements. The search is mainly for a replacement for striker Gabriel Jesus. Negotiated in August with Manchester City for €32.75 million, Gabriel Jesus will no longer be at the club from January 2017. The chance of continuing at Palmeiras for six more months to play in the Libertadores has been ruled out. The request for a player with similar characteristics to the 19-year-old was made by the technical committee of Palmeiras in the middle of this year. The main objective of the board at the time, however, was to maintain the squad for the season.

In the last transfer window, the club could prevent the sales of three players who were considered starters. Defender Vitor Hugo had a proposal from Fiorentina, while attackers Róger Guedes and Dudu had refused offers from Spartak Moscow and China. Now, with the players kept, the board tries to move ahead of rivals, with the power of conviction that Palmeiras are a structured club with title chances. According to Mattos, Palmeiras are currently the first choice of most players in Brazilian football. This does not mean, however, that it will be easy to find a suitable substitute for Gabriel Jesus. Mattos said: “Replacing a player who, at 19, is a starter for the Brazilian national team, it’s an arduous task not just for Palmeiras, I think for any club in the world.”
