Gabriel Jesus was a big doubt for Palmeiras until hours before the game against second-placed Flamengo, but was surprisingly included in the starting lineup.
Gabriel Jesus found the net six minutes from time to equalise for Brasileirão leaders Palmeiras, but missed other opportunities and lamented the draw against Flamengo. The 19-year-old was, nonetheless important for Palmeiras to stay ahead in the Brazilian Championship table. His team had conceded a goal, scored by former Palmeiras midfielder Alan Patrick and despite playing with an extra man on the field [Márcio Araújo was sent-off], they struggled to level the score.
Gabriel Jesus said: “I feel sad for the result and even more so for my finishing. I cannot lose goals. I could have rolled the ball to my teammates, but I didn"t see that they were there. If I was not 100%, I would not be on the field. No use to force. After the goal, I came to hug the physiotherapists because they and all the medical staff helped me a lot. I owe a lot to them for making me 100% today."
Brazilian national team coach Tite was also present at the Allianz Parque to watch the game on Wednesday night. Gabriel added: “I"m very happy that he was here and praise me. He"s a great coach, one of the best in Brazil. But my head is now focused only on Palmeiras. When I"m with the Seleção, the focus will just be on the Seleção."
