When Brazilian player Wendell Lira was nominated for FIFA’s Puskás Award in November 2015, he was unemployed.
Two months later, in January, Wendell Lira signed a contract with Vila Nova, won the Puskás Award for the best goal of the year, by beating Lionel Messi and Alessandro Florenzi. In May, the agreement with Vila Nova was terminated, after three games as a starter. Wendell Lira decided to take another passion to reinvent himself away from football – video games. During the Ballon d’Or gala in Zurich earlier this year, Wendell Lira accepted a challenge from Abdulaziz Alshehri, a Saudi Arabian, who was the best FIFA gamer on the planet. Wendell won 6-1.
He told UOL Esporte: “The salary I receive today is higher than what I did as a footballer. Changed completely, now I can give a better life for my family, for my daughter. Today there is no shortage of things to her. Of course it’s just been two months and I’m still structuring the financial part. It will take a little bit. It’s been many years with this financial problem, but the channel has helped me a lot, I thank God.”
