Arsenal’s Brazilian defender Gabriel has returned to first team training, just over a month after being ruled out for 6-8 weeks, after an injury sustained in a pre-season friendly against Manchester City in Stockholm.

Gabriel twisted his ankle in the dying minutes of the Gunners’ final friendly, which encouraged the London club to sign £35m German defender Shkodran Mustafi. Prior to Arsenal’s last game against Watford a fortnight ago, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was hopeful of an early return.

“He’s progressing very well. He’s ahead of schedule. We said six to eight weeks and we think it could be six,” Gabriel featured in the pictures of first team training on Arsenal.com, which suggests that he may return even earlier.

Gabriel won’t be considered for today’s game with Southampton and is unlikely to be part of the squad to face Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League. However, he could make his return in Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Hull City next Saturday.
