Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has praised the strength in depth in the Reds’ squad for this season. The Brazilian nearly moved to Galatasaray this summer, before boss Jurgen Klopp blocked the move and Lucas believes that his side have the depth to challenge for honours.

“I think it’s clear that we have very good players in every single position – and not just one good player, I would say we have two teams you could put out to get you results,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“Of course the Premier League is very difficult, but I think the squad we have, with the new players who have made us stronger – hopefully it’s going to be a very good season for the club. Our start to the season could have been better though.

“Especially the Spurs game – we had a chance to win the game. The Burnley game was a strange one because we had a lot of the ball.  I think it’s an OK beginning. We’ve played three games away from home in a row, and against two teams who will challenge for the top four and the title, so it’s not bad.

“But we need to get points and win games in a row as soon as possible because we want to be higher in the table. I’m really looking forward to the new season and hopefully it’ll be a good one for me personally.”
