Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesús has been handed the number 9 shirt, as Brazil announce their squad numbers for World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Colombia. Jesús was called into the senior squad for the first time by new coach Tite following his part on Brazil’s Olympic gold medal on home soil.

The City forward, currently on loan at his boyhood club Palmeiras, admitted that the shirt carried with it a “huge responsibility” given its previous incumbents. The shirt number allocation implies that the 19 year old could be considered as a starter in Quito on Thursday evening.

Brazil have struggled for qualify centre forwards over the last 5 years, with the likes of Leandro Damião, Fred and Alexandre Pato failing to convince in the role, whilst other options explored since, such as Diego Tardelli, Robinho, Jonas and Ricardo Oliveira, are all the wrong side of 30.

Elsewhere, Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho is handed the number 11 shirt, again suggesting that he is a prominent member of Tite’s squad. Chelsea winger Willian takes his customary number 19 shirt for the Seleção.
