Grêmio midfielder Walace has explained his pivotal role in Brazil’s Olympic side, with manager Rogerio Micale favouring a high pressing approach. Walace came into the side following the suspension of Thiago Maia and has kept his place in Rogerio’s 4-2-4 formation.
“Micale has asked the whole team to focus on getting the ball back as quickly as possible, whenever we lose it,” he told FIFA.com, “That means tracking the ball earlier, higher up the pitch. The important thing then is to keep possession.
“When we lose it we have to press so that we can get it back with space available for the front four to show what they can do. That’s my job, along with Renato, the full-backs and even the four players upfront. Our orders are to go and press.” Walace explained.
Walace’s induction into the starting line-up, alongside clubmate Luan, has coincided with an upturn in fortunes for Brazil, after 0-0 draws with South Africa and Iraq in their opening two matches, “Obviously I was delighted to break into the team and do my bit in turning the tournament around.
“I think I’ve helped but the whole team deserves credit for how we have been able to close teams down fast.” Since those 0-0 draws, Brazil have defeated Denmark 4-0, Colombia 2-0 and Honduras 6-0. They will play Germany for the gold medal in the Maracanã on Saturday.
