Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos has never played at the Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
On Wednesday, Brazil will face Honduras in the semifinals of the men’s football tournament in the Rio Olympic Games. It will be the first opportunity for young defender Marquinhos to play at the Maracanã. Marquinhos has been an important part of the defensive system that hasn’t conceded a single goal in Brazil’s last five matches – a friendly, and four official games in the Olympics. Revealed by Corinthians, but sold to AS Roma at the age of 18, Marquinhos talked about the prospect of playing at the historic stadium.
He said: “All players grew up listening to stories. For history and for all that has happened there, it is a special stage. It’s a dream realized for every player. A unique opportunity. We are very happy, we have a mission to be champion, seek this unprecedented dream, we know the way ahead. Honduras is a very difficult team, I watched the game against Korea. They are very compact, in defending.”
