Jonathan Calleri was part of the Argentine football team that participated in the Rio Olympic Games, but suffered elimination in the first round of the competition.
Premier League side West Ham United have officially confirmed the signing of Argentine striker Jonathan Calleri. The 22-year-old, who belongs to Uruguayan club Deportivo Maldonado, has agreed a season long loan deal with West Ham. Calleri, who even scored a goal in the team"s only victory [2-1] against Algeria, still saw the team get eliminated in the first round of the men"s football tournament. Jonathan Calleri played on loan at Brazilian side São Paulo until July, and he was also the top-scorer of Copa Libertadores.
West Ham coach Slaven Bilić said: “We signed Calleri. Unfortunately for him but good for us Argentina were knocked out of the Olympics on Wednesday, they didn"t pass the group stage, so he should be here with us, not today, not tomorrow, but pretty soon, depending on work permit or whatever."
According to British newspaper Guardian, there was a late interest from Barcelona in Jonathan Calleri, and West Ham had to pay a fee of £4 million to seal the transfer. The player also sought former West Ham forward Carlos Tévez for advice, before making a decision on his future.
