Best player in the world on three occasions, top-scorer and winner of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and widely acclaimed as one of the greatest strikers of all time, Fenômeno Ronaldo regrets not winning Gold in the Olympic Games.
The Olympic Gold medal in football is the only title missing from Brazil"s trophy cabinet, but Ronaldo thinks the current generation are capable of winning the competition in Rio de Janeiro. He told Globo Esporte: “Of course [I regret]. We all Brazilians regret. It"s a stone in our shoe. We"ve been close several times, but we didn"t get the Gold. We now have a great opportunity, playing at home and with an amazing generation, we can win the Gold if they move in the right direction. I"m betting on this team. I have followed these young talents for so much time, Gabigol and Gabriel Jesus are ready for Europe and are major players. With the presence of Neymar, who"s much more mature today, Brazil are one of the favourites."
Ronaldo also remembered the 1996 Olympic Games, where he started on the bench, but displaced Sávio from the team and formed a strike partnership with Bebeto. Ronaldo scored five goals, and six months after the end of the competition, he was crowned the best player in the world. He added: “I have great memories. That is where I began to establish myself in the squad. I started as a reserve, won the position and scored five goals. It was a shame the game against Nigeria, we were winning 3-1 but we didn"t have enough experience to hold the result."
