Brazil midfielder Renato Augusto is dreaming of winning an Olympic gold in his home city this August. He was called up as a late replacement for the injured Douglas Costa as one of the three permitted players over the age of 23 allowed in the squad.

Renato is the only carioca in Rogerio Michale’s squad and he is dreaming of securing the country’s first gold for soccer in the Maracanã, close to where he grew up, “It will be a dream to play in Rio, where I was born, grew up and I was raised right near the Maracana.

“Having family and friends around, cheering for me and the team, it will be even more fuel more to fight for this unprecedented gold medal,” the midfielder, who will join up with his teammates tomorrow, after Beijing Guoan’s Chinese Cup Quarter-Final match, told ESPN Brasil.

“The setting could not be better,” he continued, “You did not think you could still compete in the Olympics. And there were only three places for (players) over 23. Unfortunately, Douglas Costa had to pull out, but I have been given this opportunity and I want to grab it in the best possible way.”

Renato does not believe that physical preparation will an issue as he employed the same fitness coach he worked with at Corinthians when he moved to China, “I knew I had to stay at a high level to have a chance to go keep being called by Brazil,” he remarked.

“I can say that the physical preparation I do is the same as it was at Corinthians, because I brought the same professional to work with me. And I always remain dedicated to training. Because of this work, I have not had any injuries.”
