Manchester City will have competition from city rivals Manchester United for the signature of Palmeiras striker Gabriel Jesús, according to Globo. Sport newspaper was reporting that a €32m fee was all but agreed between City and Palmeiras on Thursday.

However, Globo says that Manchester United have upped the ante by offering €35m. There is a clause in Gabriel’s contract allowing him to leave for Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, PSG or Manchester United for €24m, but Globo report that United are prepared to offer more in a bid to beat off interest from City.

The veracity of the report has to be called into question because transfer clauses don’t tend to work this way. If United trigger the clause they have no need to worry about City’s interest, other than to agree personal terms with the player. If United activate the clause, they don’t have to negotiate with Palmeiras any further, so it is unclear to what ends they would offer €11m more and what that would achieve.

Whatever the player decides, he will almost certainly stay with Palmeiras until December at least, when the Brasileirão season ends. He is the current top scorer in the Campeonato and his side lead the league table. He will represent Brazil at the Olympics in August.
