The CBF have granted Atlético Mineiro permission to select left-back Douglas Santos for their Brasileirão match against Coritiba on Monday evening. Initially, the Belo Horizonte club’s request to release the player, part of Brazil’s Olympic squad, denied.

However, the CBF have relaxed their position and granted him permission to play for Galo before joining up with Rogerio Michale’s U-23 squad, who will compete in the Olympics on home soil in August.

This will be Douglas’ 100th game for Atlético. Douglas was linked with a move to Arsenal earlier this summer and there is still a good chance that he could leave for Europe following the games. He had an unspectacular spell at Udinese as a teenager, but his performances for the Alvinegro have caught the eye since he joined in August 2014.

Douglas was called into Brazil’s Copa América squad this summer to give him tournament experience ahead of the Olympics, even though he did not manage to make an appearance. With Marcelo and Filipe Luis now in their 30s, Douglas Santos, just 22, is seen as an heir to the left-back position in the Brazilian national team.
