Alexandre Pato has been officially released by Chelsea today, following the conclusion of his loan spell from Corinthians. Pato spent 5 months on loan in London, appearing just three times and scoring once.

He will now return to his parent club Corinthians. Pato joins Falcao and Marco Amelia in being released by Chelsea. In a short statement, Chelsea said, “Pato arrived on loan from Corinthians in January when our striker resources were stretched.

“The Brazilian netted a debut goal, scoring from the penalty spot in a 4-0 win at Aston Villa in April, and made his one start for the Blues a week later at Swansea…Chelsea Football Club thanks the players for their contributions and wishes them success in the future.”

Pato will rejoin Corinthians for training on Tuesday, when his future will be deliberated. Pato’s contract with the club expires in January. Yahoo Esportes in Brazil reports that Corinthians manager Cristavao Borges is interested in retaining the player, concerned as he is about a lack of attacking options.

However, the board are thought to favour a loan to Europe until the end of his contract in December in order to keep his high salary off the books. Relations between Pato and Corinthians are strained and it is believed that the board favour moving him on as quickly as possible.
