Brazil’s Olympic team coach Rogerio Micale refused to confirm that Neymar would assume the captaincy of the young squad, in his press conference yesterday. Rogerio announced his 18 man squad, Neymar, along with Douglas Costa and goalkeeper Fernando Prass, are the three players over the age of 23 included in the squad.

Neymar is currently the captain of the senior side, though there are rumours that incoming boss Tite might be minded to allocate the armband elsewhere, with the Barcelona forward already overburdened in the Seleção side.

At the squad announcement press conference, Rogerio said only that he would speak with Neymar “eye to eye” before confirming his decision, “It is a difficult question,” he said, “I will speak with Neymar eye to eye, let us talk as people.

“We will look at the other players, see which characteristics of each one. I do not draw a conclusion on any player as I have been in position for a minimal amount of time. I believe that Neymar can be captain, just like any other. Everything will depend on training, our conversations and with a mutual respect for all.”

Rogerio said that speaking with his players will be his priority, before making any public announcements on the issue, “I can not get carried away by any external review without at least having a conversation.

“I want to talk to everyone and then choose the best possible way to decide who will be the captain. We have several players with this quality. And the armband is just a public display of a leader on the pitch. I do not want just one, I want everyone in this role.”
