Four days after the departure of Tite, Corinthians announced on Sunday morning that they’ve appointed Cristóvão Borges as their new coach.
After the 3-1 win over Botafogo, Corinthians president Roberto de Andrade said that they were not rejected by any coach and asked fans to be patient with the newly appointed manager. But UOL Esporte reported that Corinthians received negative responses from Roger Machado, Sylvinho, Fernando Diniz and Eduardo Baptista, before confirming Cristóvão Borges. Roberto de Andrade said: “I got messages from all over Brazil, offering me managers. Corinthians didn’t receive ‘no’ from anyone.”
According to ESPN Brasil, José Miguel González Martín del Campo, also known as Míchel, a Real Madrid idol and participant in two World Cups with Spain, was offered to Corinthians. Míchel was excited with the idea of leading a Brazilian club, but Corinthians didn’t want him.
On the other hand, Brazilian journalist Juca Kfouri revealed that Corinthians also tried for Portuguese coach André Villas-Boas, who rejected the offer. Villas-Boas, who recently left Russian side Zenit, has had spells at Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.
