The CBF’s selection coordinator, Gilmar Rinaldi, has insisted that Dunga’s job is not under immediate threat in the wake of Brazil’s group stage elimination at the Copa América. There was plenty of speculation over Dunga’s future going into the tournament and with another tournament failure, it is not expected that the Brazil manager will remain in situ for much longer.

It seems almost certain that he will undertake his duties for the upcoming Olympic games at least, with Gilmar confirming that meetings are currently taking place over the selection of the squad. Speaking at the Seleção’s hotel in Boston, Gilmar told reporters, “I called the president and asked if he would be there because we need to make decisions about Olympics.

“I called Dunga and Andrey (Lopes, assistant coach) because they need to be with me. Wednesday we have to deliver the provisional list of 35 players to the IOC (International Olympic Committee). From this list 18 will be selected and 4 that may replace them with injury. I have made contacts with clubs, but releasing players is difficult.”

It is suspected that Gilmar himself will have his position reviewed, but he and Dunga are likely to stay in post for the Olympic games in August, “Dunga is set for two years as coach of the Olympics. For my planning, it remains the same. So much so that we are taking advantage of this flight delay to set some names from the list of 35 players for the Olympics.”

Gilmar insists that Brazil are on the right track, despite some below par performances in World Cup qualifying and in consecutive Copa América campaigns, “We are sure that he is doing a good job, serious, clean and transparent. Everyone can see.

“I disagree that we only reap bad results. We had good results against big teams, but problems in the Copa America. I believe we are on the right track, but we have to improve on some things. We are so sad for the Brazilian people, we and the players, no one slept that night.”

Globo is reporting today, however, that Gilmar and Dunga will be called into a meeting today to discuss their futures. The Brazilian news company says that the CBF’s priority is to appoint Corinthians coach Tite and also to take ex Arsenal midfielder Edu to replace Gilmar. Edu Gaspar is currently the Director of Football at Corinthians.
