While negotiating the permanence of defender Maicon and the renewal of playmaker Ganso, São Paulo admits the possibility of losing at least one player from their starting XI in the upcoming transfer window.
In the view of leaders at the club, 22-year-old defensive midfielder Rodrigo Caio should be the favourite to leave this summer. Rodrigo Caio, who was part of the Brazilian national team in the Copa América Centenário, has long been seen as the player with the highest potential for a sale in the squad. Although the priority is to maintain and strengthen the squad for the Copa Libertadores semifinals, the board believes that a good sale at this point would be important to balance the accounts. Rodrigo Caio is expected to receive proposals to leave, but São Paulo would try to negotiate a deal to keep him until the end of their Libertadores campaign.
Last summer, São Paulo had officially announced that Rodrigo Caio was sold to Valencia for a €16 million fee, but the deal collapsed after he failed his medical examinations. Agent Jorge Mendes soon took Rodrigo for a medical at Atlético Madrid, but the player turned down the loan offer put forward by the Colchoneros. The family of Rodrigo Caio then decided to take charge of his career.
