Brazil centre half Gil insists that he does not feel under any extra scrutiny for Copa América despite the absences of Thiago Silva and David Luiz. The Shandong Lueng defender will start alongside Miranda in the centre of defence, with Luiz and Silva both having been left out of the squad.
But the ex Corinthians man is taking their absence in his stride, “I came to do my job, regardless of who’s here. I’m sure David and Thiago are great players and people, but the choice is Dunga ‘s. If he chose me and the other players, is because he has confidence in our work and knows our potential. I do not feel pressured.
“Brazil begin their Copa América assault on Saturday evening against Ecuador in the Rose Bowl, where they won the World Cup in 1994. Gil insists that confidence is high ahead of the tournament opener, “This is a group of champions, players who work hard. All have given their best to not feel a lack of pace in the games. We are training as hard as possible for a great opening game.”
Gil was one of many Brazilian players to move to the Chinese Super League in January. Ex Timão teammate Elias nearly joined the exodus and still might yet. Gil was evasive over questions around his ex club mate’s future however.
“To be honest, we never talked about it. I heard some news, but do not touch this issue. Let’s see what he says. We hope that Elias will be happy, regardless of whether or not he goes to China.” If he does decide to make the move, Gil is confident that it won’t hurt his international prospects.
“I’m sure being in China does not change anything. I’ve always been very confident and positive in what I do, whether I play in China, Brazil or Europe. I will give my best to follow the Brazilian national team. I was again called and have a winning mentality, to integrate in a group of champions. It is a privilege to be here. “
