Brazilian pair Thiago Silva and Marcelo have been selected in UEFA’s Champions League squad of the season. A UEFA panel selected the 18 best performers in this year’s competition and both players made the cut in the defender’s section.

Marcelo won the competition with Madrid this year for the second time and he played the full 120 minutes and scored his penalty in Saturday’s final shootout in Milan. Thiago Silva was also selected for his displays in the centre of Paris Saint Germain’s defence.

PSG were eliminated by Manchester City on away goals at the quarter-final stage. Thiago Silva was the only player from outside of Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid to be selected.

Neither Thiago Silva not Marcelo have been selected to represent Brazil at next month’s Copa América, having both fallen out with coach Dunga. However, this achievement suggests that their club form is progressing just fine.
