Brazilian goalkeeper Júlio César, formerly of Queens Park Rangers, finally signed a contract extension with Benfica on Wednesday.
Júlio César has agreed to stay at the Portuguese club until June 2018, and the veteran will earn a salary of approximately €1.5 million per season. Signed by Benfica in August 2014, the 36-year-old finished the current season as a reserve at the club. It took him almost two months to recover from an injury on his right thigh, suffered in early May, and young Brazilian Éderson took over as starting goalkeeper. As mentioned in GOAL Brasil, the renewal of Júlio César, by the way, is another strong indication that Éderson may be sold in the upcoming transfer window. Éderson has been called up by Dunga for next month’s Copa América Centenário in the United States, but the 22-year-old is all set to leave the Portuguese side this summer. Inter Milan and Manchester City are two clubs interested in signing Éderson, who’s expected to be a starter for Brazil during the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
