Former Brazilian footballer Pelé revealed on Wednesday that he “almost cried" when he saw the national team being defeated 7-1 by Germany in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Pelé was in Italy for the launch of his film, at an event organized by the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport. The King of Football was also asked about the story told in the film, and said he “was thrilled" when he saw the images for the first time. Pelé said: “I was 9 years old when I saw my father cry. It was after the Maracanazo, the defeat of Brazil against Uruguay in the final of the World Cup. Two years ago, when we were humiliated by Germany 7-1, my son saw that I almost cried. For Brazil, it was an unexplainable disaster."
Pelé then talked about the star players from the past and present, and the legend said his favourite player at the moment is Lionel Messi. He said: “It"s very difficult because there have always been players who have been compared with me [as the best ever]. First there was Di Stéfano, then Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Bobby Charlton, Maradona and now there is Messi. Leo is the one I like the most; he"s the most complete."
