Benfica striker Jonas has spoken of his delight at being called into Brazil’s Copa América squad, following injury to Santos’ Ricardo Oliveira. Oliveira had to pull out and Dunga has called for 32 year old Jonas, who has scored 36 goals in all competitions for Benfica this season.

“I am very happy to be called up, it completes what has been a wonderful season,” Jonas told SporTV. “I always say that to be considered for the Seleção is an honour and a source of pride. I am at the disposal of Dunga for whatever he needs. Let’s go in search of the title in USA. The only thing that is upsetting is Ricardo’s injury.”

“It was an amazing season,” he continued. “It has to be celebrated. We won two titles, we became three-time league champions, which has not happened for a long time, we got to the quarterfinals of the Champions League, and I managed to beat my total of goals for last season.”

Ricardo Oliveira revealed that it was with great reluctance that he informed the CBF of his knee injury, “As everyone knows, I have struggled with a sore right knee. It happened in the final. After a lot of treatment, the pain has continued in the past few days.

“For two weeks I have worked with the medical department at Santos… there was an improvement, but still some limitations of movement.

“I decided to contact the leaders of the CBF to explain my situation and we agreed that I would not present myself for the Copa America. I will continue with my treatment and hope Brazil have a great tournament. I thank the fans for all their messages of support.”
