Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho says that Liverpool are focused on winning their first trophy since the 2012 League Cup, by beating Sevilla in the Europa League Final in Basel tonight. The Reds lost the League Cup Final on penalties to Manchester City in February and finished runners up in the league in 2013-14.
Coutinho wants to go one further tonight and win his first silverware with Liverpool against back to back Europa League winners Sevilla, ‘The expression we use in Brazil is “we hit the post” and we have done it a few occasions.
‘It will be really important for us to finally win something with Liverpool. That will be special for everyone across the club and the whole squad. We are all focused on the trophy. Personally for me, winning the trophy is the most important fact.
‘The positive consequence of winning the trophy is getting a Champions League spot but the squad are focused on the trophy. As I said before we hit the post on a few occasions so it is really important we win the Europa League.”
Coutinho joined the club from Inter Milan in January 2013 and was voted the Players’ and Supporters’ player of the season for Liverpool in this campaign. He will also be part of Brazil’s Copa América Centenário squad this summer in the US.
