FIFA announced on Monday the names of referees selected for the male and female football tournament at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro this August.
Sandro Meira Ricci will be the only Brazilian refereeing the contest between the men accompanied by linesmen Emerson Carvalho and Marcelo Van Gasse. Neuza Back will take the flag in the competition among women. The organization said it will be 88 professional referees from 40 countries for the competition which starts in August. The men’s tournament will have 18 referees and 32 assistants, while the women’s competition will have 14 referees and 24 assistants. All six confederations of FIFA will be represented. A team of instructors including former professionals, physiotherapists and sports scientists will regularly evaluate those selected until the start of the competition. The football tournament in the Olympics will take place between 3 and 21 August with both finals being played at the Maracanã. In addition to Rio de Janeiro, five other cities will host the games – Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Manaus, Salvador and São Paulo.
