São Paulo will approach CONMEBOL to have striker Jonathan Calleri in the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores 2016.
The player was sent off at the end of the match against The Strongest on Thursday, in the final group stage game of the competition. Subbed off during the match, Calleri got into a mess with players from both teams at the end of the game. In the end, he was sent off by the referee and would be unavailable for the quarterfinal fixture against Mexican side Toluca at the Morumbi stadium. São Paulo director Luiz Cunha said that the Argentine was the victim of a misunderstanding after players of The Strongest took his celebration as a provocation. He told Rádio Bandeirantes: “We are very concerned and we will use all our efforts at CONMEBOL to show that Calleri had no interference, and that they attacked from behind and cowardly. There was an atmosphere of euphoria. Calleri came to celebrate, and sometimes during these celebrations they say words that are not provocative. Calleri ended up being the victim of a misunderstanding of the referee.”
