Atlético Mineiro are trying to complete what would amount to one of the most surprising transfers during the Brazilian window, as they negotiate a deal to take Fred from Fluminense. Fred has spent the last 6 and a half years at Fluminense, where he is currently the captain.

Fred has won two Brasileirão titles with Flu and is considered an icon at the club. However, he wants to move having fallen out with new Larenjeiras boss Levir Culpi. Atlético are negotiating his signature, with São Paulo also said to be interested.

Fred was born in Teofilo Otoni in Minas, near the city of Belo Horizonte, there Atlético play. The move would be particularly surprising given that Fred spent two successful years with city rivals Cruzeiro, whom he has been linked with a return to in recent years. He also played for América Mineiro in the city.

Galo already have Lucas Pratto upfront, though he has become a transfer target for clubs in the Chinese Superleague and could leave once the Copa Libertadores concludes in August. Flu are thought to want several players in return from Galo as part of the deal, with Carlos, Thiago, Eduardo and Jesus Dátolo all thought to be on their wish list.

Fluminense boss Culpi spent 2015 as Galo’s manager and knows most of the squad very well. Atlético have already added significantly in attacking areas with the additions of Robinho, Clayton and Jonathan Cazeres. Negotiations continue with reports suggesting that Fred flew to Belo Horizonte on Wednesday after training to discuss the transfer.
