Brazil defender Gil says that Uruguay’s Luis Suarez is “impossible to stop.” The ex Corinthians centre half, who moved to Shandong Luneng in January, could come face to face with the Barcelona striker on Friday in Pernambuco.

Suarez has not played for Uruguay since biting Italian defender Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup, but will return for the World Cup qualifier against Brazil. And Gil is well aware of the task that awaits the Seleção in trying to stop him.

There is no way to stop Suarez. He is an excellent striker, an excellent player,” Gil said at a press conference in Rio on Monday.

“The important thing is to prepare the best way we can. And we cannot limit ourselves to a single player, we have to focus on stopping the whole team. We have to be confident,” he continued. “We know that games of this level are very tight. We are sure that we will train well and our goal is now to put in a strong performance.”

Gil also allayed fears over his own fitness since moving to China in January, “My whole life I have always taken care of myself, both on and off the field,” he said. “Anyone who knows me knows how hard I work. For me this has not changed, I am still doing extra work after training. I did not go to China to quietly retire, like many people have said.”
