A friendly, five games in the Paulistão and three in the Libertadores; São Paulo have played nine games this season and the only outfield player to have started all of them is Rodrigo Caio.
Finally fixed in his preferred position, the defence, he has worked as a right centre-back, but is now on the left. He has had four different partners at central defence and has scored two goals, against Novorizontino and Rio Claro. In the last three games of São Paulo, the number 3 has had three different players partnering him. In defeat to The Strongest, Rodrigo Caio played alongside Lucão, and in the win over Rio Claro, when he scored the winning goal, he started alongside Lugano who made his debut. On Wednesday, he played with another debutant, Maicon, who came from FC Porto. The season began with Rodrigo Caio and Breno in central defence, and it was the formation for the first three games of the year; the friendly against Cerro Porteño, and the opening games of Libertadores and Paulistão against César Vallejo and RB Brasil, respectively.
Breno hasn’t yet recovered from tendinitis in his left knee, and his injury led coach Edgardo Bauza to make tactical changes. Rodrigo Caio started to work on the left of the defence, something which he was not used to, as Lucão, Lugano and Maicon went on the right side. Rodrigo Caio said: “I felt quite comfortable. I do not see any problem in working on the left side. My adaptation was quick, because I started the season training on the left with Breno, but in the game, acting on the right. When Breno was hurt and Lucão came in, I went to the left. I’m feeling very good and confident.”
