Brazilian side São Paulo were crowned U20 Copa Libertadores champions on Sunday night at the Estádio Defensores Del Chaco in Asunción, Paraguay.
São Paulo lifted the title by defeating Uruguayan club Liverpool 1-0, with a goal from Lucas Fernandes, who’s one of the main attractions of this Tricolor side. The match was hard for the Brazilians, so much so that the goal came 38 minutes into the second half. São Paulo’s title winning campaign started with a draw with Libertad of Paraguay in the group stages, followed by convincing wins over Independiente del Valle of Ecuador and Peruvian team Melgar. They then overcame Lanús of Argentine in the semifinals with a 3-2 victory. Liverpool took the initiative in the starting minutes, but their attacking thrust was controlled with good ball possession of São Paulo. In the second half, Liverpool were more organized, but gradually the opposition managed to regain control of the match. São Paulo were still lacking in their finishing despite creating chances well executed by the players. Liverpool tried to hit the Brazilians through counter attacks, which was their main weapon, but unsuccessfully. Best for the most of the game, São Paulo took the lead seven minutes from time, through Lucas Fernandes. Tournament top-scorer Luiz Araújo crossed the ball after good play down the left, and David Neres rolled it towards Lucas who did expertly well to find the net with a quick turn and shot. David Neres of São Paulo and Liverpool’s De Amores were sent off by the referee as the players lost control of their temper.
