São Paulo are expected to close on Monday the signing of 27-year-old central defender Maicon, who belongs to FC Porto.
According to Globo Esporte, the loan deal to bring Maicon will be until June of this year. São Paulo’s Argentine coach Edgardo Bauza was keen on adding another player to the position in his squad, following the physical conditions of Diego Lugano and Breno. And on Sunday, young defender Lucão was once again heavily criticized by the Tricolor supporters for being an utter disappointment in the 2-0 defeat to rivals Corinthians at the Itaquera. The club’s board tried to close with Argentine defender Marco Torsiglieri of Mexican side Morelia, but failed to reach an agreement. Initially, Maicon’s contract will be until June 30, just like striker Jonathan Calleri. São Paulo did not comment on the arrival of Maicon, and refused to discuss the possibility of him staying if the team advances to the final of the Copa Libertadores. The deal must be closed quickly so that Maicon can be registered before Monday’s deadline to send the list of players for this year’s continental competition.
