Brazilian club Santos have issued a statement lamenting the attitude of their supporters who painted over the image of Robinho on the “wall of idols” at the club’s training centre.
Santos have promised to redo the tribute to Robinho, who signed a contract for two years with Atlético Mineiro on Thursday. The protest was similar to that made against two other players who have exchanged Santos for rival clubs: playmaker Paulo Henrique Ganso, who went to São Paulo in 2013 after demanding high wages, and midfielder Arouca, who filed a lawsuit against Santos over unpaid salary and eventually went to Palmeiras. Santos’ statement read: “Santos regrets the attitude, and repairs will be made on the space. The work will be redone, with Santos idol Robinho again being painted on the wall that honors the stars of the club’s history.”
The illustrations on the wall of the training centre, made by the artist Paulo Consentino, is to honour the idols of Santos’ history, like Pelé, Pepe, Coutinho, Clodoaldo, Rodolfo Rodríguez, Giovanni and Neymar.
