Even with a penalty missed by Michel Bastos early in the second half, São Paulo qualified for the group stages of this year"s Copa Libertadores following a 1-0 win over César Vallejo on Wednesday night at the Pacaembu.
As the first-leg in Peru ended 1-1, Tricolor managed to advance in the competition with a 2-1 aggregate win after substitute Rogério found the net three minutes from time. Just as in the first match, São Paulo completely dominated their opponents in the second-leg, but wasted numerous chances before opening the scoring. After Thiago Mendes had squandered a big chance to open the scoring in the first-half, Michel Bastos saw his spot kick hit the post in the 49th minute. In addition to the penalty, São Paulo still had two other efforts from Húdson and Jonathan Calleri which hit the frame of the goal.
The Brazilian club will now join defending champions River Plate [ARG], The Strongest [BOL] and Trujillanos [VEN] in Group 1 of the continental competition. The opening game of São Paulo will be against the Bolivians next Wednesday, again at the Pacaembu.
