Santos have turned down a proposal from Italian side Chievo to loan 21-year-old midfielder Léo Cittadini.
Chievo wanted to keep the player for two years and set a price to purchase him definitively. According to the information from Globo Esporte, the youngster came to accept the offer, but was then convinced by Santos coach Dorival Júnior to stay. The club’s board were also not pleased with the figures offered. Léo Cittadini talked to Dorival and heard from the coach that he is in his plans for 2016. Léo has been training in a new position and believes he can thus provide competition in the frame, where Lucas Lima is a regular starter. The refusal of Santos frustrated Chievo, as they saw in Cittadini a “new Felipe Anderson”, who was also revealed at the Vila Belmiro. In addition, the fact that the player has Italian citizenship encouraged the Europeans since the midfielder would not occupy a non-EU spot at the club.
Léo Cittadini stood out in Santos’ title winning campaign in the 2013 Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior. He got promoted to the professional squad, but was loaned out to Ponte Preta. His contract with Santos runs out in December 2018.
