Atletico Mineiro waiting on response from Robinho, confirms president

January has seen Brazilian talent flee for China in their droves, but one star Brazilian could be making the opposite journey in the coming weeks. Former Real Madrid, AC Milan, Santos and Manchester City trickster Robinho could be set for a move to Belo Horizonte club Atlético Mineiro.

Robinho left hometown club Santos for a third time last year to join Chinese club Guangzhoe Evergrande. However, he is understood to be considering a move back to Brasileirão. Santos are interested in taking the playmaker for a fourth spell, but Galo president Dan Nepomuceno has confirmed reports that Atlético have made an offer too.

Atlético will compete in this year’s Copa Libertadores, unlike Santos, however, the player’s emotional attachment to the latter means the player has a decision to make in the coming days. “I'm a friend of Modesto (president of Santos), who was hospitalized recently. I have a lot of respect for him and the Santos,” said Nepomuceno.

“Everyone knows that Robinho has a different relationship with Santos. Atletico-MG has an interest; I talked to the Robinho’s agent, who knows what the club can offer. If Robinho does not go to Santos, Atletico-MG is the first choice for the player, "Nepomuceno said.

Galo have recently lost defender Jemerson to Monaco and are on the lookout for a new creative player, after the departure of Giovanni Augusto to Corinthians recently, and Robinho is Galo’s first target to atone for the loss of Giovanni Augusto. Nepomuceno also moved to deny other reports that have been circulating over Atlético’s transfer activity.

"I'm seeing and reading a lot of stories that are not true. Pratto will stay. There's nothing with Nilmar of Valdivia and much less Fred. We have partnered with DryWorld (their kit manufacturer) to bring two or three names. I'm focused on bringing a replacement for Giovanni Augusto. And we are attentive to the issue of Robinho, "he added.
