It has been a year since Lucas Silva’s move to Real Madrid, but the Brazilian hasn’t had the expected success in European football.
Lucas was loaned out to Marseille by the Spanish club last summer after they activated the option to buy-back Casemiro from FC Porto. On Friday, the Brazilian midfielder saw his name being removed from the list of players of the French team for the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League. In six months in France, Lucas Silva has started just 17 matches. Besides the lacklustre performances, arrival of Florian Thauvin from Newcastle and Steven Fletcher from Sunderland were key in coach Míchel González’s decision to cut off the ex-Cruzeiro man from the squad taking part in the continental competition. There were reports in Spain on transfer deadline day linking Lucas Silva with Belgian side Anderlecht, but the board of Marseille apparently vetoed the negotiations. The intention of the French team is to use the young Brazilian in league and cup matches. Lucas’ loan deal with Marseille ends on June 30, and it remains to be seen whether the 22-year-old has a future at Real Madrid.
