When Alexandre Pato signed for Chelsea last week, he will have been met with a sea of friendly and familiar faces. Chelsea is one of the top destinations for Brazilians in Europe and the ex-Milan striker is already familiar with the likes of Oscar, Diego Costa and Willian.

However, he was also reunited with an old friend from his Milan days. Keeper Marco Amelia, who joined the Blues as a free agent in October, told the Chelsea website, “Pato is my friend. We played three years together in AC Milan and he played very well there.

“The last year he had an injury and went back to Brazil but the past three years he played very well in Brazil and scored lots of goals. Pato can play in different positions, as a no.9 striker, as a no.10, they are the same for him.

“He is a very quick player, a very technical player and good at take-ons. He is a good man and Chelsea is a good chance for him to play in Europe again. In England it is different football because it is very strong but for me he is a good player for England because he has the right mind to play in this country.

“Now we wait because he had finished the season in Brazil and he has started training and maybe he can soon help the team play for wins because Chelsea is a top club and every game it has to play to win.”

Pressed for a favourite memory of his old teammate, Amelia replied, “‘I remember he scored a lot of goals in Italy but I remember one game – a derby against Inter and Pato played very well and scored two goals.

“We didn’t have Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the pitch as he was suspended and Pato played striker no. 9 and played with the team, with a good attitude because it was an important game for winning the league which we did later that season.”
