According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea’s deal to take Alexandre Pato from Corinthians is in its final stages. Last week, the deal looked set to completed imminently, but negotiations have taken a little longer than expected.

Reports began to circulate that interim manager Guus Hiidink does not want Pato. Amongst the Brazilian striker’s representatives is Iranian agent Kia Joorobchian, who helped Roman Abramovich to buy Chelsea in 2003. He also represents the likes of Oscar, Ramires and David Luiz. It looks as though the deal to buy Pato was more Abramovich’s idea than Hiidink’s.

The Mail’s report that the deal will be an initial loan with an option for a permanent purchase at the end of the season may well be viewed as a compromise between the owner and interim manager. Pato’s Corinthians deal expires in January 2017 and they will be desperate to finalise a sale in advance of his deal expiring.

Timão own 60% of the player’s rights and are keen to recoup as much of their outlay as possible following his disastrous transfer to the São Paulo club in 2013. He spent two years on loan at city rivals São Paulo, but now Corinthians are at a stage where they are desperate to sell. The most attractive proposal for the club came from China, but the player is insistent that he wants to return to Europe.
