Touted as the greatest jewel from Santos’ youth academy after Neymar, Gabriel ‘Gabigol’ Barbosa shows calmness despite all the pressure and expectations placed in him.
At just 19, Gabigol stood out for Santos last year as he ended up being the top-scorer of Copa do Brasil, a feat he achieved in 2014 as well. Santos were runners-up in the cup competition, but lifted the Campeonato Paulista at the start of 2015. Gabigol is confident about playing the Olympic Games, praised his teammates and dreams of winning Gold in the competition. He told SporTV: “I am delighted for the Seleção, and to be part of the Olympic team. The players are very good, they are all superstars. It can be a very special year for me, to play the Olympics in my country. So this year will be special for everyone. Not only for me but for all Brazilians. We have to be united, focused, and work hard to be able to reach the highest step of the podium.”
In the interview, the Santos forward also ruled out leaving Santos to play in China, Europe or the United States.
