Without a club since the end of last year, Brazilian striker Leandro Damião wants to set his future by the end of the week, and his next destination can be Portugal.
As mentioned in Globo Esporte, Sporting Clube, the domestic league leaders in Portugal, have started negotiations with the player and his agent to try to reach an agreement in the coming days. Sporting would be offering Damião a six month contract, with an automatic renewal option if he plays a certain number of games. Negotiations are at an advanced stage, and a final outcome depends on what the player decides. In an interview with Rádio Gaúcha, the former Cruzeiro number 9 revealed his preference to work in Europe. One of Téofilo Gutiérrez or Islam Slimani can leave Sporting soon, and they are looking for an alternative.
Damião played on loan at Cruzeiro last season, after failing to make any meaningful impact at Santos. The player went to court against Santos over unpaid wages, and had won the right to terminate his contract. However, the Regional Labor Court reversed the decision and ordered any foreign club interested in signing Damião to deposit a staggering €200 million [his release clause] at Santos. Damião was supposed to re-join the Vila Belmiro side and start training, but the latest decision from the Superior Labour Court once again made him free to sign with any team.
