An intermediary who"s involved in the negotiations for 22-year-old striker Jonathan Calleri has confirmed that the player is edging closer to Brazilian club Atlético Mineiro.
Calleri had his economic rights acquired by investors this week for approximately €11 million, and agents are trying to take him to another team until the middle of the year. Calleri and his club Boca Juniors would have a deal in place with Inter Milan but the Italians are without a non-EU spot. The deal for Calleri would be similar to the one that took Nicolás Otamendi, now at Manchester City, to Atlético Mineiro in 2014 when La Liga side Valencia couldn"t register a non-EU player.
It"s important to note that Calleri was not included in the official team photo of Boca Juniors for the 2016 season. The intermediary was quoted in Globo Esporte: “He"s getting closer [to Atlético Mineiro], but would now be standing at 70%"
According to sports daily Olé, Brazilian clubs, including Cruzeiro, have contacted the representatives of Calleri. However, the board of Cruzeiro released a statement on Wednesday denying the information, stating that the attacker was never in the plans of the club.
